Actor-politician Ramanathan Sarathkumar and his wife Radikaa have been sentenced to one year in prison in a case of non-reimbursement of checks. The verdict was announced by a special court in Chennai in seven default cases against the couple. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5 crore in connection with the case, writes the India time.
Now the two have asked the court to request a suspension of the sentence.
The case dates back to 2018, when money lending company Radiance Media Private Limited, Nandanam, filed a lawsuit against the celebrity couple. The company alleged that the Sarathkumar were not repaying the loans. The duo had taken out a huge loan to produce their film Idhu Enna Mayam in 2015. The film was directed by AL Vijay and had Vikram Prabhu and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles.
It was reported that the couple had borrowed 1.50 crore rupees from the company. They later issued two refund checks that were bounced. In 2019, the Sarathkumar seized the court to quash the criminal proceedings against them, but the request was refuse.
Ramanathan is a well-known face of Tamil cinema. He started his acting career in 1986 with the movie Telugu Samajamlo Sthree. Initially, he was chosen only in negative roles, but gradually began to play important supporting roles. Over the next few years, he managed to carve out a niche for himself as a lead actor. He has appeared in over 130 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu.
He entered politics in the 1990s and was very close to All India leader Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Jayalalithaa. In 1996, he joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and founded his own political party called All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi in 2007.
